Green Coffee Bean Extract Side Effects

…& Chlorogenic Acid Side Effects

Are There Green Coffee Bean Extract Side Effects?

Based on the current information available (as of May 2013) there are no known adverse side effects from green coffee bean extract supplements. The most popular research to date has been done by Dr. Joe Vinson, a chemist from the University of Scranton in Scranton, PA. Dr. Vinson stated in a widely publicized press conference (circa late 2011/early 2012) that in the study he headed there were no adverse side effects reported by any of the study participants. A company that produces green coffee extract supplements funded Dr. Vinson’s work. Dr. Vinson further stated that this lack of adverse side effects was in contrast to some prescription drugs used for weight loss, which did produce side effects, some serious.

Dr. Vinson’s study demonstrated successful weight loss results with study participants losing an average of 17 ½ pounds over 22 weeks and 16% body fat. The study participants’ did not alter their diet or exercise patterns. While the results were extremely impressive and encouraging, it should be noted that the first Vinson study was a small study. A follow-up study conducted by Dr. Vinson was announced in April 2013 in which Vinson cited the positive effect of chlorogenic acid on blood sugar in humans, in addition to weight loss. In the 2012 press conference, Vinson indicated the successful weight loss results from green coffee bean extract was likely attributable to the chlorogenic acid contained in raw, unroasted coffee beans. Other previous research over the years has shown chlorogenic acid to have an impact on blood sugar. Likely there will be further research into the efficacy and safety of green coffee extract, and chlorogenic acid, in the future. But, the current data, even though based on small studies, is impressive.

Digging Deeper – Green Coffee Extract Side Effects From Some Supplements?

Consider these 2 kinds of green coffee supplements.

1) 100% Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract Supplements
2) Green Coffee Supplements with Added Ingredients (i.e. NOT pure)

The discussion above involves a pure green coffee bean extract product form a specific manufacturer. But the key factor is that the substance was pure and had a high chlorogenic acid level. Many, if not most, of the green coffee supplements being sold today are not pure and many, if not most, have added ingredients. Some are even spiked with caffeine and other unnecessary ingredients. So when choosing a green coffee product it is critical to read the ingredients labels very carefully to verify the product is pure and does not contain additives.

Some things to look for in a green coffee supplement:

1) 100% pure.
2) Purity of ingredients and chlorogenic acid level should be verified by an independent testing lab.
3) Chlorogenic acid level should be at least 42%
4) Minimal caffeine.
5) Made in the USA, or other trusted location.
6) No additives.
7) Ideally the ingredients label should indicate only one (1) main ingredient.
8) The “other” ingredients should indicate what the capsule itself is made of.
9) There should be no “fillers” or flowing agents. Fillers are unnecessary ingredients used to make the capsule look full.

The “pure” factor is extremely important. As far as we know, there are no known negative side effects from “pure” green coffee bean extract. The problem is that many of the green coffee supplements on the market are not pure. They often contain fillers, flow agents and other ingredients and these ingredients could cause side effects, depending on what those added ingredients are.

So if you want to minimize your chances of having any negative side effects from green coffee bean extract, you absolutely must use only 100% pure green coffee extract with no additional ingredients. How can you tell if a green coffee bean supplement is 100% pure? Read the label. Any website offering green coffee extract, or any other supplement, should prominently display the ingredients label just like we do here on HealthFoodPost.com.
